Fields of Fantasy

Hi guys,

I get a lot of you guys asking if Fields of Fantasy is a real videogame. Unfortunately, it's not - I made it up for the book. (Though it should be!! I'd totally play it if it was!!)

However, that doesn't mean there aren't other games like it! The games are called Massive Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Games. Or MMORPGs for short. The one I modeled Fields of Fantasy after is called World of Warcraft. In World of Warcraft you can actually have elf characters very similar to Allora.

Some people even cosplay these elves at fantasy/sci-fi conventions. Isn't she pretty? (I don't know her, I just pulled her picture off the internet.)

One difference though between World of Warcraft and Fields of Fantasy is these "blood elves" as they are called are part of the Horde faction. Human characters are on the Alliance team. So a human (like Sir Leo) and an elf (like Allora) would never be able to play together in World of Warcraft. They'd be sworn enemies!

But I couldn't have that for my book!! So I changed the rules for my own game. That's the good thing about making up a game!

And yes, I was a World of Warcraft gamer girl myself!! And my character's name was Allora! But she was actually a human warrior, not a blood elf mage. :) I had to give up WoW last year though - as it was taking up too much time that I should have been devoting to writing!!

Marianne

UPDATE TO ADD: (9/23/15)

Since I get  a lot of traffic on this particular post of people wondering about Gamer Girl and Fields of Fantasy and whether Fields of Fantasy is a real game or if Gamer Girl will get a sequel, I wanted to add some information about a new book I have out - that will definitely appeal to those of you who loved Gamer Girl and love RPG video games like Fields of Fantasy. It's called THE CAMELOT CODE. And while the hero and the heroine of this book don't play Fields of Fantasy, they are also big gamers and do play a similar game called Camelot's Honor.

Here's the description of the book!

All fourteen year old Sophie Sawyer wants to do is defeat Morgan Le Fay in her favorite Arthurian videogame. She has no idea the secret code sent via text message is actually a magical spell that will send her back in time to meet up with a real life King Arthur instead.

Of course Arthur's not king yet--he hasn't pulled the sword from the stone--and he has no idea of his illustrious destiny. And when a twist of fate sends him forward in time--to modern day high school--history is suddenly in jeopardy. Even more so when Arthur Googles himself and realizes what lies in store for him if he returns to his own time--and decides he'd rather try out for the football team instead.

Now Sophie and her best friend Stuart find themselves in a race against time--forced to use their 21st century wits to keep history on track, battle a real-life version of their favorite videogame villain, and get the once and future king back where he belongs. Or the world, as they know it, may no longer exist.

I'm reading "Gamer Girl" right now its the first actual book thats not manga that im reading since 3 yrs now. I thinks its on of the best books every im on chapter 8 and it was hard to put it down just to type this im about to start reading it im in spring break so im hoping to get done with it by monday ive just went through 8 chapters since this morning till 3 pm. if you now of any mmorpg that has awsome graphics or just like the one you wrote about but not world of warcraft plz send a chatango message to me my chatango name is smoores2. if you have any manga books or anime shows you made also tell me. im looking forward to reading the rest of the book its so addicting and very realistic. i feel bad for Maddy i hope everything turns out good for her but dont spoil it. I like the picture of Maddy wearing black on the cover of the book you should make it a manga. I hope Billy becomes less of a problem for Maggy =) dought that will happen. I'm a member of runescape.com and its sounds like the game your talking about but you cant choose between races but there about to make a mini game were you can be creatures and walk around and play with others as like a bear, goblin, etc.

smoores2 said...

you can do that on runescape but to play games you have to go to funorb.com wich is part of runescape so u need a runescape login to do it

I finally finished gamer girl and i knew from near the beggining that chad was SirLeo but when SirLeo said that stuff to her at the end i got mad but i realized how he said "Whatever, dude. I can't believe you actually thought you'd have a chance with someone like Chad Murray. LOL LOL LOL" then i noticed hot it said his name and not me so i knew right away it was billy. But i totally love your book im supprised i read a whole chapter book its been so long i just read manga but im going to be like maddy and comfront the book club and tell them that i acctually read a chapter book and i liked it which is going be hard to do becuase they might laugh at me becuase im the only on they now that dont read chapter books and to change is sorta wierd. PLZ MAKE A MANGA BOOK OUT OF THIS AND ALSO A ANIME MOVIE IT WOULD REALLY BECOME A GREAT HIT AND ILL DEFFINITLY BUY IT FOR SURE BUT PLZ TELL ME IF YOUR GOING TO MAKE IT.

I just read Gamer Girl, I finished it about 5 mins ago. Its's realy good, finished it in like one night. But yes, Runescape owns WoW.
Runescape, by the way, if free, just a few extensions if you become a member(or "mem" as its called on RS). I think that Jagex needs to update the free version, but its still got good graphics, and is basically like your "Fields of Fantasy" game but you can only be a human. (my Runescape user is Sapoman, but dont send me a friends request please, im just mentioning this to see if anyone else has seen me before on RS.)

I think you should make a sequal, because all of us who read Gamer Girl would get it. I also think we should go bother Jagex or whoever created WoW and make them create a Fields of Fantasy game, because it sounds like a blend of WoW and Runescape and good old Morrowwind, for which my friends and I have been waiting for a couple of years.
(mabety not morrowind so much, but the races sorta comes form there mabey, morrowwind has like 53 races to chose from, but im typing this at 12:42 at night, so im not starting it up to find out lol)

LOL, i think you could call me a devoted book reader... i LOVE how you make Chad and Maddy get together at the end! i read that part at least 4 times!!! Thank you for writing such a good book!!! -Penny K. (thats my writing name!)

Right now, I am in the process of reading Gamer Girl, and I am so shocked by how similar Maddy and I are. I really enjoyed reading this, since I could draw many parallels between us (Both like manga, both wear hoodies, both have split parents, both have annoying little sisters, both play video games, both made fun of in school). So yeah. I'm loving the book. I think I might actually buy it (and I usually only spend money on manga). I think that you did a great job making the book seem like a manga, but actually a chapter book.

And to all who want a free MMORPG that's really good, try Atlantica, Saga, or Shaiya.

irl I red Gamer Girl and I loved it! Seriously though, Fields of Fantasy should be a real online thing. That would be awesome. Oh, and I do think you should make a sequel, too, Marianne. Gamer Girl was one of those books that I couldn't put it down, and having a sequel to look forward to would be....nice. lololololz

I really enjoyed your book and how you included many manga references. I got a attracted by the word 'manga' especially. Thanks so much for publishing your book! I really did hope there was a game like Fields of Fantasy, but much like 'The World' in the '.hack' series, there wasn't really a game ;w;
It's alright, though, because this book was just enough for me
Yes, I even put down my current favorite -er one of them- manga, Pandora Hearts, to read your book, and I'm glad I did!
Thanks again for publishing~

Simply to put the book Gamer Girl is amazing! I can relate to Maddy and what she is going through in her Real world. 100% thumbs up!

A fun Free MMO that would allow you to be both an Elf and have a boyfriend ( and could actually marry!) Would Be Perfect World Internationl! It's a fun game that I'm head over in heels in love with i play it like everyday and the best part about it is that its FREE! No monthly charges! The only way they make money though is by having a cash shop where you can buy fashion for your charecter, and tons more! It's amazing and i would recomend it to anyone who wants the feel of Fields of Fantasy!! I'm sorry mari but Runescape is a tad bit lame, i mean i played it and all but there are way better games out there!! I'm on the lost City Server! Hope to see you there!! (won't comment on actual in game name though unless you really want it lol. If u do want to know my Cleric's name hit me up on Myspace ~Jordan~ is my profile name!)

I just finished Gamer Girl, and now I tried to look up Fields of Fantasy. Call me a nerd, but it's nice to see a kinda goth manga/anime lover/drawer! I can easily relate to her, because i myself am a gamer girl, and have a love for all things Japanese and artistic. I myself started an Anime club at my school when i read about one in this book. Thank you so much for giving me the corage to stand up to the 'Haters' at my school! ^^

idk if WoW is any good and runescape looks kinda lame (ive watched my cousin play it... looks bad sry to all the ppl that like runescape). i'm playing wizard101 right now and its kinda like fields of fantasy just the graphics arent as good as WoW and you cant choose between being and elf and a human so your only left with wizard/magician. lol you can date on there, get married, do quests, but the way they make money is buy buying certain areas and worlds. and the game itself is 100% free. if you want to go out of wizard city you have to buy crowns to unlock the area forever or get a subscription to just unlock every area and you pay monthly for that. (i know i kind of sound like a nerd or a geek... and i'm a gamer girl and ive been one since maybe like 3 or 2 years ago...) i can kind of relate to maddy i guess. ive had to move several times in my life leaving my friends behind and then they pretty much forgot me... :( when i first moved here which was like 6 years ago, i thought i'd never have any friends and my old friends would forget me and my old friends did forget me (well some of them) but eventually i made a ton of new friends and now i have a lot of friends. but now my mom is thinking of moving into a bigger house AGAIN!!! i dont know what i should do. maddy likes chad but she feels like she shouldnt. i also like someone and he has a girlfriend and i know i shouldnt like him since i think he's way out of my league but its just a crush... it'll never happen anyway. i love reading, watching, and drawing manga/anime. i love the ending but face it in real life sometimes there just arent happy endings and i always think about what my life would be like if i had a happy ending once in a while. and my life well it kind of sucks like maddy's right now plus my parents split like her's too although i'm not goth. sigh... life can suck way more than games... thats why i started playing wizard101 i didnt like my life so i turned to online games to escape from reality. (p.s. my wizard101 name is Haley Dawnflower. level 23 and a life wizard in case you want to add me)

I loved the book. I finished it yesterday. I usually don't read books over again, but this is defintely one I would. I was hoping I could play the game Feilds of Fantasy, but I was disappointed when I found out it wasn't a real game. If it was me, I would write a sequel to "Gamer Girl" as her life is after the happenings in the book. I'm already imangining how it goes afterwards. :)

SadisticSydney said...

I think that Gamer Girl was an amazing book!! I love the ending. Like Maddy, I want to create my own manga, but i don't have the artistic ability... but i'm trying to find somewhere to learn. And i think a manga club would be a good idea for my school, because theres a few girls in my grade that are really into anime and manga, as well as myself. I REALLY would like to see a sequal to Gamer Girl, And find out what happens for Maddy's second year at her new school. I just couldnt put the book down! And i actually finished it today. One of the BEST books i have ever read.

I used to play runescape, (three years- two as a member) and it would be something quite close to feilds of fantasy, but runescapes graphics arent good. I"ve never played W.O.W, but it costs too much, But it would be really cool if someone could make a feilds of fantasy game for real, based on everything you described it as in the book.

If Fields of Fantasy were a real online game you bet your beta I would play it. Im not so much of a gamer girl but I would just have to become one.

there's a game similar to the game in the book.
its called Luna Online. it has super cute manga/anime graphics and you can be an elf or human. you have to download it and its a pretty big file, but its free, and a lot of fun :) the link to the website is http://luna.gpotato.com/ and i know that the company that makes the game has a bunch of other games.

Haha, I'm a true roleplaying gamer girl myself. I just recently got your book, Gamer girl(totally awesome by the way!!) your a really cook book artist, and I think I have alot in common with you. I've played WoW and workd of Warcraft , and recently I'm playing a game site called Perfect World! Haha, I feel so bad for Maddy though, I woukd totally be her friend. I mean, I'm a skater type girl myself, and I love My Chemical Romance!! It was a shock to me that I found then in your book. Me and maddy( your character in the book) have alot in common. I recenty moved, and had to say bye to my friends *frowns* and whe n I went to my new school, I wasn't to popular. I can draw also and I've recenty made my own manga! Haha I hope to read and hear more from you. Your a really amazing and outgoing author.

mm I read your 'Gamer Girl' and I have to say it's a really good book. It reminds me of my life, except for the 'everything works out happy' part. *sigh* This book deserves a manga, so I'm going to draw one now. :D it'll be a bit weird to see a sequel to this though, sorry >< but the sequel would probably be about her dad's computer addiction yeah?

Her grandmother reminds me of mine too, and my mother. *frown*

Overall, it was a brilliant book. :)

heya i just read this amazing book, really loved it though it was kinda obvious all would turn well and that it was Billy screwing around on SirLeo's account, but otherwise ***** stars from me. the reason i came to read this book, and i admit that it was soley based on the word "Gamer" lol but i really came understand the hardships and you can really relate to the character no matter age, or gender. (i am 14 and a male) and i came to this site just to look the game up "Fields of Fantasy" though thoroughly upset it has not come to be, i am glad to hear that other people enjoyed this book as much as i did. And i totlly agree with smoores2 tht there hsould be a manga for this book, it would be a best seller for sure, though make it longer cause i was dying for more to read on the adventures of Maddy and her Knight in Shining Armor

I am a Gamer Girl like Maddy (Woot!) and I think that the game most like FoF would be Guild Wars. You have to buy a CD (like FoF) and it's a lot like WoW and RS. My brother plays it a lot, and it's really cool. I personally play RS, WoW is too expensive.

ah yes, I used to play on my dads WoW account before he deleted it. i was Sockets; a lvl 63 bood elf pally and my dad was Rep; a lvl 80 undead priest. totally leet. We were part of the guild 'Pain and Suffering'. ahhh.. those were the days...

I bought Gamer Girl a couple years ago, and just reread it again. I only have two books about video games, so it's always a fun read. Just reading it has me itching to play WoW! xD I used to play on my brother's account but he always deleted my characters when I got to level 20 or so, and I can't even use his account anymore. Maybe in the future I'll make my own account, but I haven't got the cash at the moment. :\ Lately I've been obsessed Dragon Age: Origins. It's totally addicting, but it's not an online game. (In fact, I can't wait to play tomorrow, ha ha!) WoW is definitely the closest to the FoF experience, but FoF does have some features that are cooler than WoW, even if they are imaginary! :) A manga of the book would be pretty neat, but I wonder about a sequel. I mean, I'm assuming Maddy would lose the contest since I don't know if people want to read about her new life as a rich manga-ka! XD

Anonymous said...

LOL I thought it was pretty obvious that it was a WoW spinoff, and I don't even play WoW.. Me and my little brother both were cracking up at the references xDD FoF and WoW LOL same with the manga magazine reference haha xD hilarious

Mari Mancusi, Let me just state this outright- your book (Gamer Girl) is absolutely amazing! To be quite frank, a sequel is your choice and your choice solely. I wouldn't want us fans to pressure you to the point of frustration, as I know the feeling all too well myself, along with many other beginning/intermediate/professional authors. Also, to me there isn't really an large enough open-end to continue on, at least not one that I have perceived. Anyway, I really enjoy your books (I hope to read many more of them), and I really think a game producer should look into Feilds of Fantasy- they'd make quite a lot of money. :3

Anonymous said...

I'm reading Gamer Girl right now, and I really wish Fields of Fantasy was a real game!!! It seems like it would make a lot of money like Genoveva Fossas said, so you should try and make it yourself! It would be so cool PLUS you'd know exactly how it has to be made because you made it up! But I'm still in the middle of the book so can people please stop giving away endings and stuff...please...

I finished gamer girl in under 2 hours! It was soooo good!!!! Its the first chapter book i've read in a while (usually i read manga) i picked it out of the library cuz the art on the cover looked manga-ish. When the characters started talking about manga, and naming manga, i was like- "OMG! I read that!" And started fangirling...-_-...there arent really much novels out there about manga. I'm really glad i found this, since im a huge otaku. Anyway, i wish there was a manga club at my school. I'd definitly join. And if they're serving pizza? Omg that would be amazing.
I can actually imagine this book turning into a manga! It would be an amazing shoujo! The story has a heroine, romance, drama, comedy, and good looking guys! XD!!!

I loved Gamer Girl. It was a little predictable, though. It obvioudly wasn't Matt because he showed ZERO signs of SirLeo being him. At fist I thought it might be Billy, but it becomes obvious soon after that it's Chad. I knew it wasn't Chad at the end sending those horrible messages first off because the way he types and worded things was different. It was totally predictable that Billy was screwing with her. I personally wouldn't have believed that SirLeo had said that to me if I were in Maddy's shoes. WAY too noticable.

Fields of Fantasy would be such a cool game to play, though. I was really hoping it was real. Two things from fiction that I wish were actual games: Fields of Fantasy, and Sword Art Online.
